We spend a lot of our time in the kitchen, and that includes social time, so why not have a space that is as aesthetically pleasing as it is functional?
Understand what you use your kitchen for
Before we start, it is good to understand what use you get out of the kitchen. A kitchen is one of the most functional rooms in a house. It is not only where we store and prepare our food, it more often than not is also where we take our meals nowadays, with the dining room only being used for more formal occasions. The kitchen is now also often the social hub of the home, where the whole family gathers to spend time together.
Select a theme
It helps if you have a theme in mind when decorating your kitchen. For instance, the industrial kitchen is very popular right now, but you could also go with a minimalist them, or a serene beach vibe or a modern, trendy look. Also choose your colour pallet. Perhaps you would like to keep your palate composed of monochrome colours and stainless steel? Or perhaps you would like fun, vibrant candy colours.
Do you have cabinets in your kitchen? Think about open shelving. Open shelving is a very attractive option for kitchens, and in fact can be more convenient. This does not have to be expensive, and you can even do it yourself, if you are inclined towards a spot of DIY. To really make this feature attractive, pour out your dry foods into mason jars or other transparent containers. It adds a kind of rustic charm to the room.
Display your wares
Gone are the days when appliances were bulky and unattractive. Colourful cast iron pots, sleek stainless steel and modern designs are the order of the day.
This does not mean you have to go out and buy completely new appliances though. You can simply store the unattractive appliances away in a cupboard where no one will see them, and bring the more attractive pieces into eyesight.
